Newcastle Diamonds are set to go down the same road as their City ice hockey counterparts Vipers in the search for a team name before the new season begins next month.

Speedway co-promoter Darryl Illingworth, who also owns Newcastle Vipers, is replicating the grand draw which resulted in winners M&M City News having their name on the ice hockey shirts until the end of the season.

"The name to go on the speedway riders' race-jackets will be decided by whoever holds the winning ticket in the grand draw," Illingworth said. "We will accept any name as long as it is not offensive.

"Tickets are now on sale at pounds 25 each and we are hoping large companies, small businesses, groups of fans, and even individual supporters will be attracted by the idea of possibly seeing their name in press and television coverage throughout the season."

The winning ticket will be drawn during the Diamonds' press and practice day at Brough Park on Monday, March 8. …
