Recognition for Everyone's Efforts
Saint Thomas More Catholic School in Blaydon, Gateshead, is one of the outstanding schools which received the top grade from inspectors.
The school, which has 1,450 pupils between 11-19 and employs more than 150 staff, improved on its rating of `very good' last year to reach `excellent' this year.
And headteacher Michael Zarraga is delighted at the accolade his school has merited.
He said: "It is a very big honour. I am extremely pleased with the recognition of the work done by the staff and everyone involved with the school.
"The standard of teaching, learning and discipline is superb.
"In the last year we have become a technology college, a training school and a leading edge school, which means we have been recognised as a leader in our area.
"The excellent rating is one given to only about 10pc of secondary schools in the country. It is not a phrase used lightly."
The inspectors looked at every aspect of the school before awarding it the rating, including the standards of leadership and management and the conduct of the pupils. …
