Newcastle United stars have turned their attention from the pitch to the golf course to raise thousands for charity.

Top players including Alan Shearer, Gary Speed and Shola Ameobi all took part in a special golf day at Ponteland in aid of the Toby Henderson Trust, which runs a pioneering autism centre near Morpeth.

The event was organised by Heroes, Newcastle United's players' association, and helped collect pounds 5,000 for research into the condition.

Club chairman and Heroes president Freddy Shepherd was at St James' Park earlier this week with goalkeeper Steve Harper to hand over the cheque to the grateful charity.

Also present were United legend Mick Martin and members of Steve Harper's team, Paul Manson, Alan Robson and Alan Thompson.

Freddy said: "Heroes is a thriving organisation which, as well as looking after many of our current and former heroes, also does a terrific amount of work behind the scenes in raising money for causes such as the Toby Henderson Trust. …
