Bruno Cheyrou has spent most of the season being ridiculed - but he hopes to end his campaign in France's Euro 2004 squad.

The young midfielder will make his fifth successive appearance for Liverpool at Bolton tomorrow in a crucial game for both sides in the race for Europe.

Cheyrou knows a continuation of his current good form can only enhance his chances of impressing the French management, who must have been wondering just what had happened to the impressive playmaker for Lille.

A pounds 4 million move to Anfield was expected to bring the 25-year-old Cheyrou's emerging talent to a wider audience.

But he failed to settle in England, picked up a succession of worrying injuries and has only recently been given his chance by Gerard Houllier.

Cheyrou said: "When I came to Liverpool one of my targets was to get into the French squad for Euro 2004.

"I knew it would be difficult but that was a challenge I set for myself.

"Unfortunately things were not going too well for me in the first year - but I am a lot happier now because I am playing games and scoring goals. …
