Durham referee Andrew Gardner will not be the most popular man in Preston.

The Grasshoppers are second-bottom of National Division Three and battling relegation but they lost 40-24 at Macclesfield after they ended up with 11 men on the pitch at one stage.

Gardner showed two Preston players the yellow card in the 36th minute, sent another Grasshoppers man to the sin-bin a minute later and made it a quartet in the 43rd minute. Also in the Division Three relegation zone, Darlington did their hopes of escaping a power of good with a 30-13 win over fellow-strugglers Liverpool St Helens.

Del Lewis scored two tries and Andrew Carphin, Craig Lee and Tosh McIntee one each as they came back from 7-0 down.

Tynedale gave league leaders Waterloo a hard time before losing 11-3 on Merseyside with Andrew Murray kicking an early penalty before a disputed try from Jan Van de Venoer and two Tony Handley penalties.

Blaydon also lost 15-3 at Halifax and picked up more injuries with Richard Windle breaking a leg and Matt Dehaty, Nick Gandy and Matt Hall all going off. …
