McClaren Rejects Cup Hangover Claim

Boro boss Steve McClaren last night denied that his players were suffering from a Carling Cup semi-final hangover.

After battling to beat Arsenal last week and reach the final at Cardiff, Boro turned off the gas against Blackburn Rovers.

But McClaren said: "It was not a hangover from the semi-final victory.

"We talked about it; we looked at the way in which Bolton won at Charlton after their semi-final win and we believed that we were capable of keeping things going.

"We had a great opportunity to beat Blackburn, but we failed to take it."

McClaren blamed missed chances, rather than a poor team performance, for the defeat.

He said: "Blackburn's keeper won them the game. But we weren't ruthless enough and all we did was hand the initiative to Blackburn. You have to score goals if you want to win matches and we failed to do that."

With trips to Manchester United and Newcastle to follow, Boro are now facing a worrying time in the Premier League. …
