Firefighters came under attack from a teenager with an airgun while tackling a 999 call.

The four-man crew were putting out a skip blaze in Washington when a youth opened fire on them with what is thought to have been a BB gun.

Stunned sub-officer Colin Hilton said he couldn't believe it as a ball-bearing narrowly missed two of his crew.

"Stone-throwing happens all the time, now this is the next phase," he said. "This is the next step to getting fired at by guns.

"It makes you annoyed because we are just trying to do our job. We are there to help people not to get shot at."

When the crew pulled up at the blaze, behind Oxclose Chippy in Raby Road, there was a group of a dozen teenagers standing by.

"They were about 15 years old, a mixture of girls and boys. They were about 10 yards away when one of them with a gun pointed it and fired," said Sub-Officer Hilton.

"The fire was nearly out and I was still at the fire with another firefighter. …
