Bungalows Flooded as Pipe Bursts

Thousands of gallons of water poured into pensioners' bungalows early today leaving residents facing a huge clean-up operation.

Three bungalows in Coulby Newham were engulfed when a pipe burst at the top of a small embankment.

Two residents were helpless to halt the flood. A third resident is away from home and her sister was called in to sort out the mess.

One of the victims Mavis Johnson, 74, of Manor Farm Way, said: "I daren't walk on anything in case I fall down.

"All of the furniture is brand new, I have only had it a year.

"I'm insured, I'm not worried about that, but I am frightened of falling down."

Both women, who were in their homes when the flooding occurred, were quick to praise the emergency services who alerted them to the problem.

Brenda Wrigley, 78, said: "I would like to thank the police, they have taken the carpet up and the underlay, they have been wonderful.

"I rang the water board and they told me that the police had already notified them. …
