Bar owner charged in sting

A Jacksonville bar owner was arrested Thursday on charges he and his staff sold beer to an underage girl several times during a three-month sting without asking for her identification.

John Douglas Corley, 40, the owner of Blind Willez at 6951 St. Augustine Road faces two counts of selling, giving or serving alcohol to a person under 21 and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The first two charges are punishable by up to 60 days in jail, the other carries a sentence of up to a year.

Police also arrested bartender Jana Veronica Pashia on a charge of selling to an underage person and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Another bartender, James Joseph Axton Jr., is being sought on similar charges.

State Attorney Harry Shorstein said the 17-year-old girl was sent into the bar by investigators and bar employees never asked her age. The girl, whose name was not released, was sold beer each of the four times she was sent into the bar over a six-week period.

Shorstein said this sting is part of an ongoing effort to arrest people who sell alcohol to minors, which became a top priority after two teens died in a car crash in May 2002 after drinking at Mandarin Bukkets Wings and Things.
