Ram-raiders left a devastating trail of damage after using a stolen car to smash their way into a newsagent's shop.

Keith Cullen and Kenneth Musgrave used a Ford Escort to attack the H&CA Smith shop in Keighley Avenue, Sunderland.

They drove the car into security shutters, stole goods worth pounds 3,200, and found they had driven the car so far into the building they could not use it to make their escape, Newcastle Crown Court was told.

The raid last August caused damage to the building which cost pounds 10,000 to repair.

Cullen, 27, of Beaumont St, Southwick, and Musgrave, 25, of Bradford Avenue, Town End Farm, both Sunderland, were each jailed for four years after admitting burglary. Cullen was also jailed for nine months for unrelated handling offences.

Mr Justice Holland said: "The message has to go out the courts treat this type of offending with a great deal of concern. It is, effectively, a small military operation with a view to theft. …
