Locked Up for 'Amateur' Robbery

A teenager who carried out an "amateurish" robbery to pay off a drugs debt has been locked up for three years.

Gary Love, 19, snatched money from the till of a Billingham shop while holding what the female assistant believed was a knife, a court heard.

The frightened assistant feared she might be stabbed during the raid, prosecutor Shaun Dodds told Teesside Crown Court.

Police inquiries led to Love, who admitted the robbery on the basis that the item he was holding was a cigarette lighter and not a knife.

Yesterday the teenager, of Roseberry Road, Billingham, was sentenced to three years in a young offenders' institution.

He had pleaded guilty to the robbery, which took place on August 30 last year at Tobaccos in Billingham town centre.

The defendant grabbed about pounds 80 in cash from the till during the raid.

Judge David Bryant told Love that the shop assistant must have been "very frightened" by what had happened. The judge said he dealt with Love on the basis that he did not have a knife or other sharp instrument. …
