Bishop Kenny Moves on; Six Late Free Throws from Brendan Walker Send Crusaders into Semifinals

When Jackson mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter of its District 5-4A quarterfinal game at First Coast High School against Bishop Kenny on Wednesday night, Crusaders coach Joe Pichardo didn't panic.

He just made sure the ball was in the hands of sophomore guard Brendan Walker in the closing minutes.

Walker responded by sinking six consecutive free throws in the final 95 seconds. That proved to be the winning margin as Kenny held off Jackson 54-48.

The Crusaders will face top-seeded Raines in Friday's semifinals at First Coast.

In Wednesday's first game, Ribault had no trouble with Stanton, winning 62-36. The Trojans will meet First Coast in the second half of Friday's doubleheader. The host Buccaneers held off Fernandina Beach 55-47.

Walker is the only non-senior starter in BK's lineup, but the 6-foot-1 guard showed his confidence when it comes to shooting free throws.

"I told coach I want the ball at that time, that I want to be at the line shooting the free throws," said Walker, who has shot better than 80 percent from the free-throw line each of the past two years. …
