Five drag queens as bridesmaids, a pub crawl reception around Newcastle - and two grooms. It's not exactly a conventional wedding but it promises to be an almighty knees-up.

Next week, John King and Andrew Madden, of South Shields, will become one of the first gay couples to wed at Newcastle Civic Centre.

The couple, who have been together for six months, will tie the knot in a commitment ceremony with a public declaration of their love.

Newcastle City Council introduced the ceremonies, which are open to heterosexuals as well as gay and lesbian couples, in April. Although they are not legally binding, officials say it is an example of how the council is widening its choice of civil ceremonies.

Barman John, 30, and 31-year-old Andrew who runs a B&B, met on a night out in Newcastle and knew straight away it was serious.
