De Vere Does Well in `Variable' Environment

Hotels group De Vere described its trading environment as "variable" yesterday as it continues to await a sustained pick-up in demand from the conference sector.

All of the group's brands are trading positively, with a strong performance in the corporate and leisure sectors offsetting weaker growth in conferences.

Updating shareholders at its annual general meeting, De Vere said group turnover in the 19 weeks to February 8 was 3.4pc higher than a year earlier.

The company's core De Vere chain - featuring 21 hotels including Slaley Hall near Hexham - improved turnover by 2.2pc with revenues per available room up 1.8pc. De Vere said: "The overall trading environment remains variable, with a strong performance in the corporate and leisure segments but, predictably, signs of recovery in conference demand following behind."

Yesterday's meeting marked the first De Vere agm for chief executive Carl Leaver, who joined the company last year from Whitbread arm Travel Inn. …
