Steve McClaren insisted he was at a loss to explain Middlesbrough's defeat to Newcastle United at St James' Park, (writes Miles Starforth).

The Carling Cup finalists led through Bolo Zenden's first-half strike but visiting defender Ugo Ehiogu gifted Craig Bellamy his second goal in two games and Gareth Southgate conceded a penalty for a foul on Darren Ambrose, from which Alan Shearer netted United's winner.

"We never looked like we were in trouble defensively but that first goal gave them the impetus," said McClaren. "But we still recovered from that and had opportunities ourselves.

"Then we conceded a penalty for the second. We seem to come away from here and each time we cannot believe we have lost a game.

"We shouldn't have lost that game. I don't like losing football matches, especially when we have performed like that and controlled a game against a team that's riding high.

"They've got a great home record and we controlled them. …
