Fire Threatens Homes on St. Augustine Road; Woods Fire Charred Tens of Acres, but No Dwellings Were Damaged

Homeowner Jackie Santiesteban arrived at her house off St. Augustine Road Sunday to flames roaring close enough to burn her back fence.

"We saw fire in the back," she said. "I thought it was going to catch my house. I started to cry. If this gets burned, I lose everything."

No one was hurt and no homes burned among the roughly 15 houses and mobile homes threatened by a woods fire that was reported at 1:25 p.m. Sunday, said Bennie Seth of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Between 30 and 40 acres burned in the fire that took about 30 firefighters and two tractors from the state Division of Forestry two hours to contain.

The fire in the 12400 block of St. Augustine Road forced the closing of the road between Caron Drive and Plummer Grant Road for about an hour early in the afternoon.

By late afternoon, trenches had been dug around the fire. Seth said a woman who spotted the fire called the department.

The cause of the fire was unknown Sunday. …
