Boxing: A Big Weight on Kerr's Mind

Unbeaten Ryan Kerr fights for the vacant Northern Area super middleweight title tonight with a stern warning from his manager Tommy Conroy.

Kerr has been forced up a weight in his search for a championship belt at Seaburn tonight when he will face his stablemate Eddie Haley before a sell-out dinner audience.

But Conroy insists that Kerr's future must be at middleweight and that he has to make the weight again.

"Ryan is fighting at 12 stone tonight because he's been struggling of late to make 11st 6lb," Conroy told me. "But even if he becomes a champion his future isn't as a super middleweight. He's not big enough to compete with the strong boys of that division.

"I intend to get Kerr his big break on TV with London promoter Barry Hearn if he beats Haley - but I've told him it'll be at middleweight. It's up to Ryan to show the dedication to go with his undoubted talent."

Kerr, born in Scotland but now domiciled in Sunderland, has won all nine of his fights, including a points decision over tonight's opponent Haley. …
