The tightest moments of this one-sided affair at Cardiff Arms Park last night took place during the pre-match pitch inspection which left the referee with the difficult choice of calling off the game and sending the Borders home after a pointless trip or playing the game and risking serious injuries.

In the end the game went ahead but the Borders were still left feeling that the evening had been pointless.

Assistant coach Rob Moffat admitted afterwards: "We were not particularly happy with the decision to go ahead. Our coach Tony Gilbert and his Blues counterpart David Young agreed to go ahead, but it had been a 50-50 decision."

Within half an hour of the start, Kevin Utterson's team must have wished that they had never agreed to it. Their prospects were not helped by flimsy tackling on a night when their opponents' back division hit a purple patch.
