Windies Green Light a Relief for Jones

Article excerpt

Simon Jones has told of his relief after being given the all clear to join up with the rest of the England tour party in the West Indies.

England left for the Caribbean on Wednesday but the Glamorgan fast bowler stayed for scans on a shin injury after he returned from the England A tour.

There had been talk in the England camp of nominating standby players if Jones failed to be passed fit. But both bone scans on his left shin have given the 25-year-old Welshmen a clean bill of health and the green light to fly out to Jamaica on Monday.

"I'm just glad nothing showed up on the scans and I can concentrate fully on the tour from now on," he said.

"All I want to do now is catch that plane for the Windies from Gatwick on Monday. And I'm looking forward to getting out there and joining up with the squad.

"Hopefully I can play in the second match on tour and from there push for a place in the Test side. I had the scans just as a precaution more than anything because I was getting a bit of pain there. It was more for my peace of mind more than anything.

"I'm happy with the way I'm bowling and, now I've had the all clear, it has boosted by confidence ahead of the tour."

Jones is concerned about any aches and pains he gets especially as he has been plagued by injury in his short career. If twice-capped Jones does make the team for the opening Test at Sabina Park in Kingston starting on March 11 it will almost 15 months to the day since he was stretchered out of the Ashes tour at Brisbane in November 2002.

He suffered ruptured knee ligaments of the right knee, which kept him out of first class cricket for more than a year. Jones could get a chance for England next week despite arriving late for the tour.

England's opening match of the tour, against Jamaica, begins on Monday but coach Duncan Fletcher is keen to involve him later in the contest fitness permitting. …
