A son who watched as his mother was rescued from a terrifying blaze has spoken of the ordeal.

Firefighters believe Carolyn Hannon, 40, was just one minute from death as they battled to free her from her blazing shop.

They managed to drag her from the inferno through a smashed door, moments before the choking black smoke took its toll.

She became trapped in her shop, Hannon Newsagents in Otterburn Gardens, Brookfield, at teatime on Thursday.

Her son Darren, 19, and his girlfriend Gemma, 18, had been with her inside the store trying to turn off a faulty gas fire when it exploded. Darren and Gemma managed to escape but Carolyn was left screaming for help as the room filled with lethal smoke.

"The firemen said another minute and my mum wouldn't be with us," said Darren.

Carolyn's exit to the rear of the store was engulfed by flames, while the front was locked with the shutters down.

"Almost instantly thick black smoke was choking us," said Darren. …
