Cumbrian Test for New-Look Thunder

Gateshead Thunder return to action tomorrow at Barrow Raiders buoyed by the signing of five players this week with more new faces in the pipeline.

Thunder will have three Kiwis, forwards Clint Brown and Petty Kenny plus centre Aaron Cowie in their squad along with Nigerian winger Peter Oshagbemi when the league season gets underway on Easter Monday.

Player-coach Seamus McCallion, who hands debuts to experienced

centres Mathew Deharty and Andy Fleming at Barrow, also hopes to attract Yorkshire-based former Super League half-back Gareth Stephens to the Thunderdome.

McCallion's options at six and seven have been limited so far this season with the young Thorman brothers and Cumbrian hooker Craig Fisher utilised though loose-forward Stephen Rutherford will assume the stand-off duties at Barrow.

"We need competition for places in several areas," admitted McCallion, "but I'm delighted with the new signings and am confident a squad will be in place to achieve wins in the coming months. …
