The closing date has passed for our Young Reviewers 2004 competition, and over the coming weeks we will be introducing you to our new arts scribes.

The standard of entries was exceptionally high this year, and today we publish the works of three reviewers who are worthy of a mention, although they did not make it on to the final list.


When 10 strangers become stranded at an isolated, storm-lashed motel with no way of getting out, it is only a matter of time before the body count starts to rise.

It's up to the quickly-dwindling survivors - including ex-policeman-turned-chauffeur John Cusack, and Ray Liotta a federal officer transporting a mass murderer to prison to work out who the guilty guest is.

The film starts with a shocking car accident, involving Cusack and a mother on holiday with her husband and child. From there, each of the unfortunate guests is dispatched in a grisly fashion.

The film sounds straightforward but you would be mistaken in thinking this is a run-of-the-mill whodunit. The film has a clever plot with plenty of twists to keep you guessing, and the tension is high throughout.

The eerie location and vicious storm are used to good effect by director James Mangold to create a dark and suspenseful atmosphere.

If you like films with a twist you won't go far wrong with this spooky psychological thriller.



With two multi-platinum albums, three number ones, two Brit awards, and a sell-out tour in 2003 alone, it's no wonder Busted are fast becoming the UK's biggest boy band. And their stunning performance at the Newcastle Arena in no way denied them this title.

As the opening chords of Air Hostess played out, just heard over the sound of thousands of teenage girls' screams, the audience waited impatiently for Busted. …
