A postman's first day on a new round ended in terror when a "hallucinating" gunman chased him down a Stockton street, Teesside Crown Court heard today.

Postie Conrad Schwab, a former soldier, genuinely felt he was about to be shot as 21-year-old Daniel Ward pursued him, prosecutor Shaun Dodds told the court.

Ward, 21, of Craigwell Crescent, Stockton, was jailed for two and a half years after pleading guilty to possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

The court heard Ward had not been taking his medication for paranoid schizophrenia and had sniffed three or four cans of lighter fuel.

He told police he had been hallucinating.

Mr Dodds told the court how Mr Schwab was delivering letters in Craigwell Crescent for a colleague who was sick.

His first contact with Ward was earlier that day when Ward asked him in the street if he had his giro. The postman said he could deliver mail only to addresses on envelopes. …
