Blaydon sorely missed skipper David Guthrie in their National Division Three game against strugglers Liverpool St Helens.

Back row Guthrie was ruled out because of work and in his absence the Blaydon pack failed to impose themselves on a game they should have won easily.

Instead they lost it in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

It was no great advert for Division Three rugby and the standard was more than matched by the quality of the refereeing.

It was a lottery which went Liverpool's way at the end.

Peter Kilburn burst through after five minutes and Tim Clappison converted before Liverpool were able to hit back through winger David Cunliffe.

He shrugged off one tackle after another in the 10th minute to go over. Simon Worsley made it 11-7 with two penalties before Clappison kicked a penalty for a high tackle on Kilburn on half time.

Six minutes into the second half, Peti Keni went over from line-out but Worsley's third penalty made it 15-14 before Clappison kicked another penalty.

Then, deep into injury time Oldham was sent clear on the right. He scrambled over in the corner for an unexpected 19-18 win.

While Blaydon were losing, Tynedale were battling back from a 16-0 half-time deficit at home to New Brighton thanks to kicking from Phil Belgian.

He put over a massive penalty from inside his own half and then added two more before Tom Wilkinson scored a try. Belgian missed the conversion but then landed a crucial drop goal to put Tynedale 17-16 ahead. In injury time he landed another penalty for 20-16.

Darlington also came back after trailing 20-0 at half-time at Dudley Kingswinford to win 35-20.

It goes a long way to helping them in their relegation battle although their last four games are against the top sides in Division Three. …
