Former Newcastle United player Lee Makel is finally celebrating today despite a nightmare weekend.

The Livingston midfielder had been on the verge of pulling out of yesterday's CIS Cup Final against Hibernian at Hampden Park.

Makel, born in Washington, was left in shock after he ran down a homeless man in Edinburgh on Friday night.

The man, who had jumped in front of his car, ended up with a broken leg but Makel, his fiancee Claire and his six-month-old daughter Ellie, who was in the passenger seat, escaped injury. Worse news was to come when Makel was forced to leave the team hotel on Saturday night after being given the news that his fiancee's father had died suddenly.

But despite almost no sleep over the previous two days, Makel decided to play in the game, which his side won 2-0. …
