The average cost of a wedding in the UK is pounds 14,000, including honeymoon and extras deemed etiquette in a traditional British wedding ceremony.

Couples can dramatically cut the cost by combining the wedding and honeymoon in one, and having a wedding overseas; this can reduce the cost to less than pounds 1,000, excluding catering costs.

Getting married is considered to be the fifth most stressful event to occur in our lives, after death of a loved one, divorce, having a baby and moving house.

It is little wonder therefore that an estimated one in ten couples now opt to get married overseas, with the most popular destination for British couples being the Caribbean followed by Las Vegas and the Indian Ocean, according to an American Express Travel Survey.

Couples can enlist the services of a travel company that specialises in arranging weddings overseas, that way the legalities of the wedding will be dealt with by the tour operator.

Jenny May, manager of specialist tour operator Direct Greece, says: "One of the most difficult aspects of marrying overseas, particularly somewhere as far away as the Caribbean, is that some members of your friends or family may not be able to share your special day. …
