Mick McCarthy insists he wouldn't swap striker Kevin Kyle for any other targetman outside the top flight.

Kyle has been Sunderland's battering ram this season, providing a physical presence up front as the Black Cats have put together a promotion bid and won through to the FA Cup semi-finals.

McCarthy has seen a huge improvement in Kyle since he took over on Wearside a year ago and the Sunderland boss reckons the 22-year-old will get better and better.

He said: "Kevin is as good as any targetman in this division.

"Let me put it this way, I don't see many strikers in this league that I would have ahead of Kevin.

"I made my mind up about Kevin as soon as I came to the club and I wanted him to be part of my plans.

"I saw him in training and I knew what he was capable of.

"Kevin takes more than his fair share of knocks and is a strong lad who has given us a terrific physical presence up front this season. …
