British Soldiers Travel to Kosovo after Violent Clashes between Albanians and Serbs

Britain was last night sending up to 750 troops to Kosovo to reinforce the Nato peacekeeping force following the worst outbreak of ethnic violence between Albanians and Serbs since the 1999 war.

The first troops from The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment are being sent to the province after clashes on Wednesday left 22 dead.

Others were expected to be deployed over the next four days.

The move follows a request for reinforcements from the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, US General James Jones.

Ministers were briefed on the decision to send the troops by Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon yesterday morning.

They will join 200 US and Italian troops who are being redeployed from Bosnia to bolster the peacekeepers.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said: "Obviously we are monitoring events in Kosovo with great concern.

"The deployment will support those troops already on the ground and will help return stability to Kosovo. …
