The broken-hearted mum of a brave North Yorkshire soldier murdered by an Iraqi mob, has spoken of life without him.

Sandra Hyde, of Northallerton, has kept a distinguished silence since her son Lance Corporal Ben Hyde was murdered in Iraq last June.

The Royal Military Policeman was one of six Red Caps killed when a lynch mob stormed a police station in the town of Al Majar al-Kabir.

He was in Iraq on a peace-keeping mission but was murdered in an attack which became the army's biggest single loss of life since the first Gulf War.

Today, a year after the start of the war and the day before Mother's Day, Mrs Hyde has told of her struggle to cope without Ben.

Writing in a national newspaper she said: "I do not have regrets that Ben chose this path.

"We must let our children prosper and thrive; we cannot be so consumed by our own fears that we fail to let them live the lives they choose. …
