Plans to expand Teesside Airport are taking a step forward.

The Gazette revealed last year that a new terminal building will eventually need to be built at the Teesside site to keep pace with booming passenger numbers.

And today the airport confirmed the development process was now getting underway.

Teesside Airport is already undergoing a number of improvements to access to the site and the current terminal building. Improvements are being made to the terminal's departure lounge, baggage handling system, car park, arrivals hall and retail facilities.

Work has also got underway on a new pounds 1.8m access road into the airport.

It will enable the airport to cope with up to 1.2m passengers a year.

But with passenger numbers due to soar further over the coming years, work is needed to create a new departure hall on a site alongside the existing terminal.

The existing departure hall has 18 check-in desks, but the new facility will initially have 24 and will have the capacity for 36 check-in desks - double the number currently available. …
