A blaze at a Teesside hotel was today being probed by arson experts.

More than 20 firefighters spent more than two hours bringing the blaze under control at the unoccupied Regency hotel in Coatham Road, Redcar, last night.

Five appliances - from Redcar, Grangetown and Middlesbrough - were called to the scene just before 9.15pm.

Six crews in breathing sets contained the fire to the room where it started - the former nightclub at the back of the building.

A thorough search was made in case anyone was still inside.

Acting Station Officer Peter Messiter said: "The room at the back of the hotel where the fire started in floor timbers was heavily smoke-logged. We confined the fire and stopped it spreading and made a final check of the building before we left."

A Cleveland Police spokesman confirmed the fire at the hotel - due for demolition on April 4 - was being investigated.

Planning permission was granted by Redcar and Cleveland Council last September to demolish the hotel and replace it with 42 self-contained apartments. …
