Values of soft top cars are going through the roof as Britain's love affair with the cabriolet gathers steam.

Despite our unpredictable climate, the clamour among image-conscious Britons to go `topless' is pushing convertible values up, no matter how old they are.

The trend is revealed in CAP Black Book, the trade-confidential benchmark guide to current used car values.

The Leeds-based firm has analysed the values of 10 very different market sectors and concludes that open-top motoring is currently one of the most prudent investments car buyers can make, thanks to rock solid second-hand values.

CAP's sample of 10 convertibles reveals that style comes at prices affordable to all, from a seven-year-old Ford Escort, at pounds 2,750 trade, to pounds 16,750 for a three-year-old Mercedes CLK 200K Elegance.

But it is the rise in values for these cars - often outperforming the rest of the market - that reveals most about Britain's growing love affair with the open top car. …
