The film opens in the Garden of Olives where Jesus (Caviezel) has retired to pray following the Last Supper.

Satan (Celentano) attempts to tempt Jesus but he resists and is soon arrested by the Pharisees, led by the betrayer, Judas Iscariot (Lionello).

Jewish high priest Caiaphas (Sbragia) and his council of holy brothers accuse Jesus of blasphemy and condemn him to death in front of his Holy Mother Mary (Morgenstern) and Mary Magdalene (Bellucci).

Pilate (Shopov), the Roman Governor of Palestine, initially refuses to accede to the wishes of the Jews and instead orders Jesus be whipped by his guards. …
