Mart Poom will not let sentiment get in the way of Sunderland's bid for promotion - even if it means dumping his old club Derby County back into the bottom three tomorrow.

Sunderland take on the Rams at the Stadium of Light and the Black Cats could go third in the table as they look to keep up the pressure on top two Norwich and West Brom.

Derby are in a precarious position just a point outside the relegation zone.

But their survival chances have been given a boost with a win against rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday and then a draw against third-placed Sheffield United in midweek.

Poom said: "I had great times at Derby and I am sure they will be OK and stay in the First Division.

"But we need three points and that is what I hope we get.

"The club and the fans are still close to my heart. I am still in touch with a few people at Pride Park and I made good friends there.

"Both teams need the points for different reasons but if we are going to fight for a place in the top two then we have to win our home games."

Sunderland have lost just one league game at the Stadium of Light all season. …
