A one man crimewave was stopped in his tracks - when police followed his footprints in the snow.

Gavin Blacklock had plagued his neighbours in Sunniside, Gateshead, running up a catalogue of 20 break-ins to feed his drug habit.

The addict, hooked since he was a schoolboy, roamed the streets looking for likely targets.

He kicked in doors, searched rooms and fled with cash and whatever valuables he thought he could sell.

Even after he was caught and bailed for a walk-in burglary at the village supermarket, snatching a handbag from an unlocked staff room, he kept up his spree.

But Blacklock picked the wrong time to strike again, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

A cold snap had left the streets blanketed in snow on February 2.

And as the 29-year-old fled a house in Coronation Street with pounds 600 of electrical equipment, he left behind a trail police could easily follow. "The footprints in the snow led straight to an address in Sunniside where the defendant was found hiding in a cupboard," said Stuart Graham, prosecuting. …
