Head Is Answer to All Saints' Prayers

A troubled Tyneside school is welcoming a new headteacher who says he is "looking forward to the challenge".

David Scott will be joining the staff at All Saints' College in West Denton, Newcastle, in September as the new headteacher.

The 55-year-old father of two has revealed that he was asked to apply for the job three years ago but turned it down. After being asked a few times more he eventually decided to apply, and was given the job.

The school's short history has been a troubled one. Within a few weeks of opening in September 2002 the Chronicle revealed the head James Colquhoun had issued 117 exclusions to problem pupils.

Then in March last year, 12-year-old pupil Natalie Ruddick was found stabbed to death at her home. And a year after the school opened, Mr Colquhoun revealed he would be leaving his pounds 76,000-a-year job.

But Mr Colquhoun left the job on a high note after Ofsted inspectors commended his "very good leadership", saying that good teaching leads to good behaviour in pupils.

The college was set up and is run by a partnership involving Newcastle University, the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle and Newcastle City Council.

Mr Scott, 55, has been headteacher at Calder High School in Mytholmroyd, near Halifax, for 16 years.

He studied at Durham University and grew up in Seahouses and says he feels like he is coming home.

The father-of-two, who is also a lay methodist preacher, said: "I am very excited about going to All Saints' College. I feel the school has made a tremendous start.

"I want to build on the success and my priority will be to improve standards of achievement. …
