The Time Is Right for Trip to Bolton

If there's a need to start harvesting points threefold from neighbouring fields - and it isn't a need it's a ruddy necessity - then perhaps the best place to begin is at Bolton on Sunday.

Because the once Happy Wanderers are no more. Since the build-up to the Carling Cup final and their subsequent defeat by a previously potless Middlesbrough the bubble has been well and truly pricked.

Bolton, once so attractive to watch with their ageing but inventive foreigners, have not won in their last six Premier League games, seven matches overall if you include the Millennium Stadium and their hoped-for finest moment.

Four Premiership matches have been lost on the bounce and Bolton's last victory was at Charlton on January 31.

Enter Newcastle United, having returned from the holiday isle of Majorca looking to make certain such trips - or even better ones - are guaranteed next season.

Difficult matches lie ahead in what is now a short run-in to dreams or nightmares so the Reebok Stadium has to represent a maximum return. Anything less and the hounds will not be snapping at the heels but actually devouring Newcastle.

Bolton's superstars craved the satisfaction of silver and, having failed to attain it, the presumption is that interest in the season has to a great extent fizzled out for them.

Did you realise, for example, that Jay-Jay Okocha - he of the boomerang free-kicks - hasn't scored a Premiership goal all season? His three strikes were all in the Carling Cup.

Youri Djorkaeff has five in the league, six all in, and Marx Brothers lookalike Ivan Campo three from his defensive midfield role which he conducts excellently.

They, of course, are the glory stars while the labourers like midfielder Kevin Nolan (7) and striker Kevin Davies (6) have done the unglamorous legwork. …
