Cowboys and girls are having a showdown hoe-down to protest at the axing of a radio show after nearly two decades.

Chronicle angling columnist Sam Harris presents the popular Saturday morning country and western slot on Radio Newcastle.

But the BBC is dropping the show as part of a reorganisation and Sam will broadcast for the final time on Paul Wappat's show between 10am and 1pm tomorrow.

Now fans are to protest outside of the radio station. Eddie Hall, 53, of Staithes Avenue, Benton Estate, has support from more than 60 country and western groups in the region. Mr Hall, whose cowboy name is Montana, is a member of the Excelsior Club in Westerhope.

He said: "Sam's programme is the only one on any local radio station in the North East. There is a show on a Saturday night which is the wrong time because everyone is out at country clubs. …
