The luck of the draw turned in Mark Tompkins' favour as Babodana equalled the weight-carrying record for the Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday.

The Newmarket trainer reckoned he had made a wasted journey to Thursday's draw when his contender was the last out and was left with stall 23.

"I was going to go one to eight and, if not that, it was going to be 24, but I might as well not have not turned up," said Tompkins.

But his hopes were raised after those drawn high had fought out the finish of the Spring Mile on Friday and, of the first eight home in the Freephone Stanleybet-sponsored handicap, only Alkaadhem was drawn in single figures.

Jay Gee's Choice led the main group on the stands' side until Babodana, who had tracked the leaders, was switched by Philip Robinson over two furlongs out and then kicked him into the lead a furlong and a half out.

Although the margin had been reduced to three quarters of a length, Babodana was never going to be caught, with Quito coming with his customary late dash for second. …
