Time to Get Serious, Singh Says after 68; Ponte Vedra Resident Shoots into Tie for Fifth, Three Shots out of the Lead

After the second round at The Players Championship, Vijay Singh made a quick, head-down exodus from the course, similar to the type of exit made by those golfers who failed to make Friday's cut.

The hurried departure must be force of habit for Singh, who had missed two consecutive cuts at The Players. This time Singh qualified for the weekend and put himself in contention. His 4-under-par 68 Friday put the Ponte Vedra Beach resident in a tie for fifth with Padraig Harrington, three shots out of the lead at 6-under 138.

"I just want to enjoy this week," Singh said. "In the past, I've put too much pressure on myself so many times here and that's backfired. Probably on the weekend I'll get more serious. Right now I'm happy with my position."

Singh hit eight-of-14 fairways but an errant drive on No. 15 ended up in the rough. From there he found a sand trap and took his only bogey of the day.

"I'm still unhappy with the way I drove the ball," Singh said. "I've been struggling with it the last week. I played decent today."

Matt Kuchar had the best day among the First Coast residents competing at The Players. And after carding a 2-over 74 in the first round, he needed a good round to stay ahead of the cuts.

Kuchar started with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes and went on to birdie four more holes, including a string of three in a row on Nos. 1, 2, and 3 en route to a 5-under 67.

The Players is just the second event the 25-year-old has qualified for this season. He finished in a tie for 48th at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

"It's no fun going home on Friday," Kuchar said. "I've had too many of those Friday nights of packing your bags . . .though I haven't had great results, I feel like it won't be too long before some good things start happening. …
