Students at Newcastle College were shocked to learn of the second shooting inside a year in the streets behind their campus.

Part-time student Sarah Nixon, 21, of Whalton, near Morpeth, was collecting her two-year-old son Joshua from the creche on the corner of Ryehill Road and Westmoreland Road. She studies at the college's Sandhill campus and said: "I will be inquiring about what going to be done. It's not really the best area to have a nursery, but fortunately I've only got another week or so to go at college."

Several art and design students had rushed to the scene, as police arrived, to see what happened.

Abby Finlay, 16, from Alnwick, said: "I don't think they should have more security at the college."

But fellow art and design student Jennifer King, 17, of Fenham, added: "I don't think they should have had us in college today."

Her classmate, Hayley Auld, 16, of Ayton Bank, in Gateshead, said: "I don't think this is the right place for a college. …
