Robert bell's Renault Formula V6 career got off to a flying start in with a podium finish - but the Morpeth racer jetted back from Italy disappointed not to have claimed the chequered flag on his Monza debut.

For the 24-year-old, who hopes this season will be a stepping stone to F1, claimed pole position for the second of the weekend's two races, and led the race at one stage only to spin off on a patch of oil. He also claimed the fastest lap.

Bell, whose team is David Price Racing, had come home seventh in Saturday's sprint race before taking his place at the front of the grid for following day's feature race.

"It was a good positive start," said Bell. "Going into the weekend if someone had said I'd have a pole position, the fastest lap and a second place I'd have taken it. …
