England Under-21 coach David Platt admits that his players have to learn quickly before the next European Championship qualifying campaign gets underway after a creditable draw with Sweden.

Platt has a total of only three friendlies - the one with Holland last November, this one in Kristianstad and then another in August against the Ukraine - to prepare his new-look squad.

The raw nature of his line-up was highlighted by the fact that the 11 players who started had only 20 caps between them.

But Platt, although unhappy with the two goals conceded by his side, took many plus points from the game in front of a 7,300 crowd in south Sweden.

Platt said: "I've learnt you don't get many friendlies. We've played Holland, Sweden and then probably the Ukraine in August.

"If you were at a club, you would have more than three pre-season games to get ready for a campaign. We've got six days of disjointed preparation spread over many months. …
