Farm Labourer Fighting for His Life after Attack by Cows

A farm labourer is fighting for his life at a North hospital after being attacked by a dozen cows.

The 46-year-old man was a casual worker helping out during the calving season at Office Farm, near Whitfield, Hexham.

He was working in a shed with a dozen cows and their calves when one of the cows became enraged because he had touched her calf.

Her panic startled the other cows and they charged at him, knocking him down and trampling on him.

He was rushed to Newcastle General Hospital by air ambulance with life-threatening chest injuries.

Bevas Jordan, manager of Office Farm, which is close to the A686, said: "People don't realise that during the calving season the mother becomes more protective and can be dangerous. We always have to be on our guard.

"Everything was fine one minute, the next a cow got upset and suddenly they all charged at him, knocked him down and stamped on him.

"His injuries did seem fairly serious but we're still waiting to hear from the hospital. …
