High School Moves Ahead in Arts; Pinellas School Will Serve as Model for Expanding St. Augustine Program

ST. AUGUSTINE -- The new multimillion-dollar performing arts wing at St. Augustine High School is nearly complete, and Principal Michael O'Loughlin said officials have found a model for expanding the school's performing arts program.

O'Loughlin said the model comes from the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg.

O'Loughlin, along with staff from St. Augustine High and Murray Middle schools, members of the community and School Board Vice Chairwoman Diane Lovell, recently visited Gibbs.

Gibbs High has a performing arts school within a comprehensive high school, O'Loughlin said.

"Students must audition. They must have a talent," O'Loughlin said, "not just an interest."

He said that's exactly what he wants to see at St. Augustine High.

The school's new performing arts wing opened last fall and includes a recording studio, a green room, a new sound system and classrooms built with better acoustics. …
