A Unique Chance for Young Talents

Article excerpt

The announcement by Schools Standards Minister David Miliband of new grants for young musicians and dancers has a significant benefit for the North East, specifically for young musicians.

The Sage Gateshead is to be one of two new centres for the delivery of the musical opportunities that these grants open up to gifted young musicians, offering a programme of tuition and ensembles previously unavailable in the region.

What is more, our young people will have unique access to the world-class musicians from every musical genre who will be performing at The Sage Gateshead every week of the year.

It is worth noting that The Sage Gateshead is not involved in providing the equivalent dance opportunities - the two new centres delivering dance programmes are in Leeds and London.

Much has been made of the search for the next Billy Elliot - what these new grants will also do is help find the next Sting or Sir Thomas Alien.

I would also like to thank those people who support the NBS behind the scenes: the local collection session organisers, companies and volunteers who make valuable contributions to help the NBS fulfil its core purpose of saving and improving lives. …
