My London TOM CONTI; the Actor Thanks Hollywood for Letting Him Buy a House in Hampstead but Resents the C-Charge

Article excerpt

Byline: ALISTAIR DUNCAN

Where do you live and why?

Hampstead. When I first came to London, Whittingtonstyle, to seek my fortune, a fellow Scot let me doss down in his spare room in Hampstead for a little while.

I instantly liked the village, and do still, despite, in my opinion, its mismanagement by Camden Council.

Where were the last three places you went on holiday?

I don't take holidays. Work frequently takes me to foreign climes, so we tend to mix business with pleasure. One of the benefits of shooting a movie is gaining access to places denied to tourists - or indeed, locals. The last real holiday I recall was about ten years ago, skiing in Courchevel, France.

What advice would you give to a tourist?

Challenge the cost of everything.

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?

I'd change all the locks at City Hall so that Ken Livingstone couldn't get back in.

What is your life philosophy?

Don't fret. It'll all be fine.

How do you get around town?

By car (a new, dark blue Mercedes), but I don't go out in it very much because I resent paying the wholly unnecessary congestion charge which is so destructive of London.

Do you have a favourite pub?

I've never been keen on pubs. Growing up in Glasgow encouraged the view that they were required only in the pursuit of unconsciousness.

Shame, really.

What aftershave do you wear?

Acqua di Selva [available from Beauty Base in Whiteleys]. It was originally made by Victor, in Milan.

The firm was taken over by Visconti di Modrone, the family of movie director Luchino Visconti, I believe.

The fragrance was slightly altered, resulting in severe identity crises for many of its faithful customers.

Outcry brought reinstatement.

What are your current projects?

I'm in LA at the moment shooting a pilot for NBC. It is hopefully going to be their flagship show, to replace Friends( which I was in for a couple of episodes). But I will also be shooting some more DoNovAn episodes back in the UK and hopefully a film called The Darkness, a very spooky and moving story written by Elizabeth Lawrence. …
