Sir Bobby Robson has told Darren Ambrose to take a leaf out of Alan Shearer's book in the art of goalscoring, writes Alan Oliver.

While the skipper hammered in two goals in typical no-nonsense style in Saturday's victory over Everton, Ambrose missed an easy chance when the score stood at 2-1 when he only had visiting goalkeeper Nigel Martyn to beat.

This led Robson to say: "I wish Darren had taken the chance which came his way early in the second half and made the game safer.

"I have told him he must learn from Alan when it comes to taking a difficult chance.

"Alan's first goal was not an easy chance. The goalkeeper came out to cut the angles for him but he still put the ball through his legs with a wonderful finish."

Robson was also not too impressed with United's defending over the second goal, when Joseph Yobo was unchallenged when he headed in a right-wing corner nine minutes from time.

Added the United boss: "We have improved our goal difference by two and that might be important because goal difference will be worth an extra point in the final shake-up. …
