It started with a late-night demand for a cigarette March 27 in the 2800 block of Philips Highway and ended with the theft of a wallet, cash, keys, a toolbox, glasses and a car jack from a 30-year-old man after one of two assailants showed a gun, police said.

The victim said he stopped his car on Philips Highway at 11:15 p.m. and two men walked up and asked for a cigarette. When he said he had none, one man pulled up his shirt to show the butt of a gun and demanded money, ordering the victim to pull his car down Westmont Avenue, police said.

The victim told police he pleaded with the men to take what they wanted and not hurt him. But when he turned away, one of them hit him in the head with the gun and took his wallet and the other items. The man said he ran after he regained consciousness, and was taken to a hospital by a city ambulance for treatment of bruises, police said.

The victim said the men got out of a gray Oldsmobile about 9:30 p.m. and jumped him as he walked home from a nearby food store, stealing the money. Police arrived to find the man wearing only socks and boxer shorts, with blood on his body and a cut to his hand. The man was examined at the scene by paramedics, police said.

Following are the crimes and other incidents reported recently in the Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office:

Police said the two boys who were fighting were issued civil citations. …
