Harmison Earned Contract the Hard Way

David graveney used to play cricket for Durham. Steve Harmison does so to this very day.

Now, of course, both are basking in the triumph of England's Caribbean calypso - Graveney as chairman of the selectors and Harmison as the Man of the Series.

They stand at the very pinnacle of English cricket and, given their backgrounds, many could be excused for believing an unbreakable bond of friendship must exist between boss and star employee.

Well, perhaps all is not as it seems. Graveney presided over the ECB decision to deny Harmison another central contract at the end of last summer, presumably because he and others believed that attitude did not match ability.

The decision to strip the big Geordie of his cash and his dignity came despite the significant part he played in helping to bowl out South Africa at The Oval last September.

Harmison, a family man, was crushed but bit his lip and soldiered on, spectacularly emerging in the Windies as a pace bowler of world class, with 23 wickets harvested in four Tests. …
